Player to Watch: Carles Gil, Midfielder
Now in his 8th season in New England, Spanish Midfielder and Team Captain Carles Gil is the engine of the Revolution attack. Having recently signed a three year extension through June 2028, the 2021 league MVP and 4-time All-Star has proven to be one of the more durable and dependable players in the league throughout his tenure in New England. Last season, Gil started in all 34 of the Rev's MLS matches, posting 24 goal contributions (10G/14A).
Tactically, Gil is a low-lying midfielder with excellent field vision. While not a particularly high-volume passer, he has excellent range and accuracy. Gil has the ability to hit balls over the top against pressing teams and act as the connector against teams sitting in a lower defensive structure. He's also a consistent threat on set pieces, delivering the ball either into dangerous spots or going directly for goal. What Gil doesn't possess, however, is size - at 5'7" 140lbs, CITY may look to be physical with the Revolution Captain to prevent him from having too much space from which to initiate the New England buildup.
